Motivated by the community
and school district administration’s concerns that low
socio-economic status children do not get the same opportunities
to succeed in sports as higher socio-economic students, San
Antonio Sports has launched a three year collaborative study
addressing the issue. The primary outcome will be to determine,
if a student is given the opportunity to participate in an
organized skilled-based after school sports program, how will
the program impact the school district’s athletic environment.
The DFY-AWD Study refines and extends
the design and development of the sports program’s intervention
component. The sports program intervention provides skill-based
lesson plans and activities in sports designed to appeal to all
students keeping them motivated and engaged. Starter equipment
to conduct the sports activities are also provided by the
partners and coaches are trained in delivery of the lessons and
use of the equipment, as well as ways to manage time.
